Family Planning Q&A

What is family planning?

Family planning supports your reproductive health, helping you choose when or if to have children.

Yao Hsu MD, Inc. assists patients with all their fertility control, family planning needs, and contraceptives, educating them on the available options and how they work.

What role does birth control play in family planning?

Birth control is fundamental to successful family planning. It enables you to enjoy a healthy, rewarding sex life without fear of unwanted pregnancy. Dr. Hsu offers comprehensive birth control options, including:

Hormonal contraception

Birth control pills contain the female sex hormones estrogen and/or progesterone. They prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation – the monthly release of an egg into the fallopian tubes.

In addition to pills that you take daily, hormonal methods include Depo-Provera® contraceptive injections that last for 13 weeks, NEXPLANON® implantable rods, which last for three years, and the NuvaRing® flexible vaginal hoop that you replace monthly.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) that fit in the uterus are a popular choice for long-acting birth control. Hormonal IUDs stop the uterine lining from preparing itself for conception. Dr. Hsu offers Skyla®, which lasts for three years, and Mirena®, which lasts up to eight years.

Copper IUDs

Paragard® copper IUDs kill sperm before they can reach the egg — they last for ten years.

Barrier methods

Male and female condoms, cervical caps, contraceptive sponges, and diaphragms are all barrier methods preventing sperm from accessing the uterus. They work best with spermicides that kill stray sperm. These are available as creams, gels, foams, and films. Male condoms are the only form of birth control effective against sexually transmitted infections.

Sterilization

Sterilization is a permanent method of birth control. For men, it involves a vasectomy to stop sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. For women, sterilization involves tubal ligation to prevent eggs from traveling down the fallopian tubes. Dr. Hsu refers men and women for sterilization.

When used correctly, birth control is highly effective at preventing conception; however, no method is perfect. If needed, Dr. Hsu can prescribe the medical pregnancy termination pill.

What is Family PACT?

Family Planning, Access, Care, and Treatment (FPACT) is available to low-income California residents. This innovative program provides comprehensive family planning to promote optimal reproductive health. FPACT lowers barriers to family planning services and reduces unplanned pregnancies.

Dr. Hsu and his medical team offer FPACT services to those who are eligible at no cost in a non-judgmental, confidential environment. You might qualify for FPACT, free of charge if you have no insurance, no source of family planning care, or a household income below 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL) and need confidential services.
